The chest is in two sections for ease of transportation. Chests that were used in the colonies, such as this one, were usually constructed of Camphor, Mahogany or Teak. The chest benefits from a rich Teak colour, with a wonderful grain configuration to the front and sides.
Mahogany, Camphor and Teak were used extensively for military chests because they had the advantage of only minimally expanding and contracting when exposed to extremes in temperature and humidity. Teak and Camphor are particularly resistant to woodworm, termites and other tropical infestations.

The chest is in generally very good condition. The top is flat with no significant marks and no splits. It is of generally a good colour. All brasswork is original and present as are all of the locks and escutcheons. The left-hand side of the chest is in generally good order with only minor veneer nibbles between the joins where the top has been lifted from the bottom. The right-hand side has similar minor veneer nibbles along this join. There is a more significant old repair to the bottom right-hand rear corner of the top right by the wall. There is a section of timber approximately 1 cm wide x 8 cm tall that has been detached and repositioned. It is the original piece of mahogany and in our opinion is not a significant issue. The back panels are original and in good order. The feet are all in good condition, however they may not be original, it is difficult to tell. The chest is structurally sound with no evidence of any woodworm.
