Mid Century Ernest Race Set of 4 BA3 Dining Chairs White Cherry Red Leather 1950
A fabulous set of four original 1950s Ernest Race BA3 aluminium chairs finished in white with cherry red leather upholstery, the chairs do have a patina showing age marks and scuffs adding to the overall charm and beauty of the set, there is a tiny 1" tear to the side of one of the seats, barely noticable and an easy fix if required.
Background:
After the Second WW in 1945 the British Government encouraged manufacturers to use new materials that were more available – like aluminium – which was plentiful due to the decommissioning of weapons and aircraft. The BA3 was a success, becoming the showpiece of the ‘Britain Can Make It’ exhibition of 1946. One of the first mass-produced, cast aluminium chairs in the world, over 250,000 were made. It won a Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale of 1954 and is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the V&A Museum, London. A stunning chair that has lost none of its modernist looks over the years.
