Finn Juhl Walnut & Blue Sideboard Credenza By House of Finn Juhl Denmark
Finn Juhl Walnut & Blue Sideboard Credenza designed by Finn Juhl in Denmark 1955 for Danish furniture manufacturer Bovirke, this stunning credenza by House of Finn Juhl, the rectangular Walnut top over two sliding doors, the left side housing two shelves the right side with storage and six slide out drawers, raised on narrow legs ending in copper sabots.
Finn Juhl’s simple yet striking sideboard combines exclusive wooden materials with the beautiful colours from Goethe’s colour wheel. With a stunning walnut frame, the contemporary design creates a stylish storage area and surface space to display and organise decorative accessories and personal belongings. Perfect for a hallway, living or dining room, the sideboard is a luxurious representation of timeless craftsmanship and iconic modern design.
Inspired by the work of his American colleagues, in particular Charles and Ray Eames, this Sideboard marks the start of Finn Juhl’s experimentation with steel.
With a veneered walnut corpus and black steel legs finished with matching walnut feet, the sideboard is truly a combination of Finn Juhl’s old and new styles. An injection of colour, in the form of two sliding doors and a six-drawer tray unit painted in cool blue hues, taken from Goethe’s colour wheel, highlights the influence of Finn Juhl’s contemporaries on his work.
The first Danish furniture designer to achieve international recognition, Finn Juhl is seen by many as the master of Danish Modern. A self-taught designer, he originally studied to become an architect but worked with the mindset of a sculptor when creating his designs. Rather than thinking in terms of practicality, Finn Juhl broke free from the constraints of conventional working methods to create truly innovative designs.
Finn Juhl
Finn Juhl was born on the 30th January 1912 in Frederiksberg, Denmark.
Although trained in architecture, it was his modern furniture designs that made him an international name. His first pieces of furniture were designed for his own apartment and were manufactured by the young Danish carpenter, Niels Vodder.
In 1946 Juhl got his first major interior assignment at Bing and Grøndahl’s store at Amagertorv in Copenhagen. This later became one of his main works and was awarded with the Eckersberg Medal in 1947. Soon after, he was given the opportunity to help furnish the new headquarters of the United Nations in NY - something which established his name with the American audience.
He is most famous today for his iconic furniture designs including the Chieftan Armchair and the 108 Dining Chair which are now produced by the House of Finn Juhl.
