15th Century French Style Gothic Revival Oak Cupboard Heavily Carved Circa1850
A magnificent, tall and imposing 15th century French style Napoleon III Gothic revival oak cupboard dating to circa1850, with extensive carved architectural decor and detail in an ecclesiastical fashion, the ornate geo-metrically shaped and carved cornice above a vaulted overhanging three dimensional arched and profusely carved cathedral style canopy with elaborate and intricate wood carvings featuring trefoil and quatrefoil motifs incorporating twin full length cupboard doors with two central carvings of two female saints carrying drinking vessels within alcoves, surrounded by fleur-de-lys and shell motifs, internally five shelves of later addition, below there are two small storage cupboards that retain the original working key, the lower section with twin heavily carved doors flanked by columns on a conforming base, comes with a hand written letter of provenance dated March 1929.
The Gothic style first emerged during the High Middle Ages and is identifiable through a number of specific details, such as elaborate and intricate wood carving, trefoil and quatrefoil motifs and substantial proportions. The style regained popularity during the 19th century Victorian period (often referenced as Neo Gothic or Gothic Revival), leading to a resurgence in the production of Gothic-style furnishings. One of the most interesting facets of the style is that it draws heavily from corresponding Gothic architecture, resulting in details such as pointed arches, columns and illusionary vaulting. Because Gothic furniture is reflective of the majestic cathedrals of the Middle Ages, there is an aesthetic emphasis on grandeur and majesty. A deep, rich colour palette — created through the use of dark woods and opulent fabrics — also adds to the luxury and formality of the style.
