Rare José Zanine Caldas Cruciform Stools Brazil circa 1970, hand carved and ebonised from the central section of Caldas’s Nova Vicosa side tables, this rare design forms part of a series of works entitled ‘Móveis Denúncia’ – or ‘Protest Furniture’ – that draws the worlds attention to the environmental destruction and deforestation of Caldas’s home region in the eastern state of Bahia, the series was developed from 1964 at his home in the coastal town of Nova Viçosa, Bahia whilst in an enforced productive retreat , under strict penal pressure from the insurgent Military Dictatorship in Brazil, Caldas was forced to resign his teaching position at the University of Brasilia and was unable to resume his tenure for another twenty three years until 1987, accompanied with a full certificate of authenticity, stamped and notarised, available individually, as a pair or as a group, breathtaking design that will complete any room.
